Why Fly Fishing? TheTroutLegend Shares His Journey!

2025-06-13

Q: How did you first get into fishing?
I started fishing when I was about three years old with a Snoopy pole back in the early' 90s. It's been a part of my life ever since.

Q: What type of fishing do you specialize in?
I've grown up freshwater fishing for bass and walleye, and later got into ice fishing. These days, I specialize in fly fishing.

Q: What drew you to that particular style of fishing?
What I love about fly fishing is that you can't use a fish finder. You have to figure out what the fish are doing and what they're eating. It's all about observation and instinct—the challenge is what makes it exciting.

Q: Can you describe your typical fishing trip or routine?
A typical local fly fishing trip involves a 30–50-minute drive to one of the rivers in western Wisconsin, where I mainly fish for brown trout. I always carry a pheasant tail fly—it works 9 out of 10 times.

Q: What's your favorite species to fish for and why?
Thats a tough one. I'd say brown trout is my favorite, followed closely by cutthroat trout and bass.

Q: What are some essential pieces of gear or equipment you never go without?
I always bring my rod and reel, a sun hoodie, my 8Fans waist waders and boots, and a pack full of flies and other essentials.

Q: Have you developed any unique techniques or strategies over the years?
Definitely. One of the best strategies I've learned for nymphing is to add weight—the faster the fly sinks, the quicker you get in the fish's strike zone.

Q: What has been your most memorable catch so far?
One unforgettable moment happened in Wyoming. We were battling 40mph winds on a tough day of fishing. On the walk back to the truck, I spotted a massive 22–23” rainbow trout moving to eat a nymph along a gravel bar. My buddies behind me were shocked at its size. I cast just five feet from the trout—and it came charging back to take the fly. It was incredible.

Q: Can you share a challenging experience you faced while fishing and how you overcame it?
Fly fishing presents constant challenges. The key is to stay patient, enjoy the process, and remember that it’s meant to be fun.

Q: How do you prepare for a fishing trip in terms of planning and gear?
Know your location, always pack fresh socks and an extra pair of pants—just in case.

Q: Are there any fishing spots you consider “must-visit” or hidden gems?
Absolutely. The Driftless Area in Wisconsin is stunning. If you get the chance, try dry fly fishing there—it's an unforgettable experience.

Q: How has fishing changed for you over time, especially with new technology or environmental changes?
Fishing is always evolving. I think the most important thing is finding what works best for you and adapting as needed.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who is just starting to fish?
Slow down. If you're struggling, turn over some rocks—see what's living under there. Let the river teach you.

Q: How important is conservation and sustainable fishing in your approach?
Very important. Respect for the environment and the fish ensures this sport can continue for future generations.

Q: Do you have any favorite fishing stories or anecdotes you like to share?
Too many to count! Stay tuned—there's always another great story coming.
